What is ART-U?

As residents and neighbors in Appleton Mills, we have collaborated with our neighbors and the Mass Alliance of HUD Tenants (MAHT) to form ART-U, a group that advocates for tenant’s rights in our community. Our goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, and we believe that everyone’s voice should be heard. ART-U is a democratic and consensus-based group that strives to address concerns about living conditions in the building. We have heard from many neighbors about issues such as safety and security, cleanliness, and problems with water. In partnership with MAHT, we have met with Trinity Management to discuss these concerns and work towards solutions that will improve our health, safety, and comfort.

What has our group accomplished so far?

On April 8, 2023, we had a meeting with Trinity Management’s upper management team. The meeting was productive and our committee members prepared statements with photos to demonstrate to upper management the issues and challenges our neighbors are facing. In light of ART-U being in the very early stages of organizing, we have already accomplished so much.

What’s the structure of ART-U right now?

As of right now, ART-U is composed of a committee of residents from the Appleton Mills. As the organization process is still in its early stages, the committee’s next steps in the coming months will be to determine how to structure ART-U in terms of leadership roles and continue following up with Trinity Management about implementing solutions for issues in the building. As of right now, before any decisions about leadership are made, it is important to note that these processes in structuring the union will take time. We understand that the structure of ART-U may be a concern; however, committee members would like to emphasize that developing our organization will take time and involves a number of steps and processes to ensure that we’re functioning in the most effective way possible to best support and advocate for each other. We need and want your involvement in this process as well to further develop and strengthen our union solidarity.

how can I get involved with ART-U?

Great question! We’d love all of our neighbors to feel welcomed and a part of the decision-making processes to ensure our community is being supported by ART-U. There are a few ways to get involved:

1. Reach out to the appletonmillsresident@gmail.com to be added to our mailing list. This will be helpful in receiving updates about upcoming meetings! Once you’re on our mailing list, we will send a link to a Google form to include the best way to receive updates from ART-U.

2. Attend an ART-U meeting! We ask that our neighbors who wish to be involved with ART-U attend a meeting to meet committee members and further establish our rich and vibrant community! ART-U also has a private Facebook page that includes important updates about upcoming meetings and building-wide concerns that you can join after attending a meeting.

How can I have my concerns addressed?

ART-U is a democratic union that will allow for voting and discussion of solutions to address issues in the building. In doing so, open and in-person discussions about concerns in the building must be civil, respectful, and professional. It is okay to disagree! Intellectual exchange and progress take time, diligence, and collaboration with neighbors. The goals in addressing concerns about the building will be discussed during meetings with tenants. Disagreements on solutions and approaching ways to address concerns will happen. Robust debate is an invaluable part of the organizing process. Our goal for having open conversations about issues pertaining to the building is to ensure that every member of ART-U is being addressed in respectful, professional, and civil language.

What should I do if I have a concern about an issue in the building?

If you have any issues or concerns about your home/unit, continue reaching out to on-site management to address those issues/concerns. If you notice an issue that seems to be a building-wide issue, an issue that you and your neighbors experience that has not been resolved/addressed by management, please reach out to ART-U at appletonmillstenant@gmail.com

In the future, will there be a bigger meeting with more residents?

Yes! We’re all neighbors and important members of the Appleton Mills community. ART-U plans on scheduling a building-wide meeting that will be open to all tenants! The date and time of the meeting are to be determined but will happen in the coming months. When a date and time are selected, we will let our neighbors know as soon as possible via email and on the ART-U Facebook Group!
